Chapter Thirteen

THE NEXT HILL REVEALED a steep descent into a valley that had been carved into the land by a once raging river. Over the Eons, the river had dwindled and sat in the pit of the valley, hardly more than a stream surrounded by polished stone. Down the hall of chipped and chiseled stone that rose up over the horizon, the sinking sun cast a faded light in hues of faded reds, giving the illusion of a first love’s faded blush.

"It was the only way," she tried to explain. "You don't understand—“ But Lolly would have none of it.

"I brought you into my family."

"You knew what he was, Lolly. Don't say you didn't. It was you who first said he came from the Realm—"

"I'm not talking about the boy!" She raised her hands up in the air. "He is a child, he cannot help his deception, but you." She shivered. "I knew I could not read your cards, that there was some darkness in your past. I didn't know you were involved in the Dark Arts."

"No! " Adelaide raised her voice in protest, then froze. The others would not remember her, but they would hear her and fill in the blanks themselves if she wasn't careful. She lowered her voice. "No, it isn't dark, Lolly. You have to believe me."

The woman puts her hand over Adelaide’s. "Dear friend, do you think after all of these years, I have not seen your struggle? But this is not the way. You must undo it. Manipulating the course of his future so he may aid you is a thing that should never be done, but especially not without his consent.”

"He’s just a child. He won’t understand."

"You risk stunting him. Changing his arc."

"I haven't made this decision lightly. I am his mother. This is my choice."

"Taking his choice isn't the same as protecting your ability to choose, and you know it. I warned you of that when you asked me to read for him...” Lolly’s voice faded as her remembering turned sour.

"You set your whole world on fire, Addie, to prove what? That you could cheat fate? All you have done is lay the foundation for everything you fear." Her eyes went wide, and her breath stilled. "Everything he has is lost."

Adelaide refused to believe it. "If I can just protect him."

"You call this protection? There are some things that can only be learned by trying. You simply traded one type of pain for another."

"What did you say?" Adelaide's heart raced as she examined her friend's face. Did Lolly know more than she was letting on? Suspicion gripped her, and suddenly, the room went cold.

But Lolly continued as if she had said nothing.

"How dare you allow your own pride to bring such heinous acts to my community? Especially now, when you know that I cannot stay to protect them."

The final words were like a dagger in Adelaide's heart.

"Let us go with you then."

"The boy will be in no state to travel." Fury creased Lolly's brow.
